TemanBerbagi.com - Wide Area Network (WAN) adalah instalasi jaringan yang dapat mencakup jangkauan sangat luas dibandingkan dengan LAN, MAN dan PAN. WAN ini tidak memiliki batasan ruangan dan bangungan, karena jarak jangkaunya hingga antar negara bahkan antar benua. Instalasi jaringan ini menggunakan fasilitas transmisi seperti kabel bawah laut, telepon atau satelit. Wide Area Network memiliki kecepatan yang berbeda-beda ada 2 Mbps, 34 Mbps, 45 Mbps bahkan hingga 625 Mbps (Tidak jarang lebih dari itu).

Biasanya Wide Area Network (WAN) menggunakan komponen dalam melakukan komunikasi biasanya terdapat 2 komponen, yang pertama kabel transmisi dan yang kedua elemen switching. Kabel transmisi itu sendiri memiliki kegunaan sebagai pengantar bit-bit dari satu computer menuju computer yang lainnya, sedangkan komponen kedua elemen switching memiliki fungsi sebagai penghubung antara 2 buah kabel transmisi atau bahkan lebih. Jadi pada waktu data yang telah dikirim telah sampai ke kabel penerima, elemen switching haruslah memilih kabel pengirim untuk meneruskan paket-paket data tersebut.

Apabila dilihat dari fungsi yang dimiliki Wide Area Network (WAN) sebenarnya tidak terlalu beda dengan instalasi jaringan lainnya seperti LAN. Semua pengguna yang berada di dalam jaringan Wide Area Network (WAN) dapat menggunakan data yang sama.
Dapat menjangkau lebih luas hingga antar Benua, Negara dan bahkan bisa seluruh dunia.
Apabila terkoneksi dengan jaringan internet, proses transfer file/data yang jaraknya jauh dapat dilakukan dengan cepat.
Dapat berbagai resource dengan koneksi workstation

Kekurangan Wide Area Network (WAN)

Memerlukan biaya operasinal yang cukup mahal dibandingkan dengan instalasi jaringan lainnya.
Dalam melakukan setting atau pengaturan pada Wide Area Network (WAN) lebih sulit dan rumit, peralatan yang dibutuhkan juga memiliki harga cukup mahal.
Diperlukan sebuah firewall yang bagus agar dapat membatasi pengguna dari luar agar tidak dapat masuk, Karena dapat mengganggu jaringan.
Mudah terserang hacker dan ancaman luar lainnya.
